If you have ever wiped a white crust off a faucet in Mesa and wondered whether that is normal, it is. It is also expensive.
What the city’s own numbers say
Mesa draws its drinking water from two sources, surface water and groundwater wells, and splits the city into zones divided roughly by the Eastern Canal. If you live in the City Zone, your water averages about 12 grains per gallon. In the Eastern and Southern zones, the average is closer to 16. The city itself suggests setting a softener at 16 and adjusting from there.
For context, water is generally classed as very hard above about 10.5 grains per gallon. The national average sits near 7. So Mesa homes are running water roughly two to three times harder than what most of the country deals with, and the Phoenix metro regularly turns up on lists of the hardest municipal water in the United States.
None of this makes the water unsafe. Mesa’s water meets state and federal drinking standards. Hardness is a plumbing problem, not a health one.
